Showing your true colors

08:00 AM on Mon Feb 1 2010

By softeam

Have you ever put any thought into why people choose certain colors?  Whether you are painting a house, buying a new car, or choosing what to wear, color comes into play.  Even identical computers and MP3 players are sold in a wide range of colors. Colors are also important in interior design and marketing.

Colors can toy with your emotions.  Hospitals are usually white to make us feel pure and at peace, plus they are often associated with cleanliness and sterility.  Blue is considered non-threatening, confident, and secure, which is probably why police uniforms are regularly blue.

Colors are definitely of consequence at the tables.  When you are multi-tabling, what kind of environment do you want to immerse yourself in?  Do you like light colors or strong colors?  Maybe you want a black background to help you concentrate on the table itself?  Perhaps green will help reduce eyestrain in a long tournament.

Don’t forget about our table skins.  We’d like to create different skins that are suitable to a wider range of our players’ needs.  Let us know what you think and what you want.  Post your thoughts into the comments section.

APCC Dinner

12:00 PM on Fri Jan 29 2010

By Trishelle

I finally got to meet Matt Vengrin! Last week I went to dinner with a few of the guys who made the final table for APCC. They were filming the final table the next day at Bluff Studios, so the night before we went to a Mexican place in Venice Beach (which I love) for dinner and drinks. Thanks AP! :) Joe Sebok was there, who I think is hilarious by the way, along with a few of the players. Christina Lindley was there. That girl is hot and a damn good poker player apparently. Mike Hofer who actually won the event and 10 thousand dollars for college and his girlfriend were there. They were both super cool and it was fun to meet and hang out with people who were really down to earth and excited about poker. I also got to meet Stephanie and Garin from AP who were so fun to hang with. I’m pretty new to AP, so I’m just starting to get to know everyone and this is so fun for me. I love getting involved with everything and meeting new people and mingling. Matt V is my new partner in crime.

After dinner, Christina suggested we all go to James Beach for drinks, so we headed there. That’s the place on the movie “I Love You Man” where they go for tacos and they say it’s the best tacos in LA. I can’t really attest to that, but the drinks are nice. A little bit after we got there, I convinced Jeff Madsen to join us! I’ve known Madsen for a few years and he’s a good friend of mine, but I forget that people know him from poker. The college guys were pretty excited when he showed up so that made me pretty happy. Jeff is great with new people, so he and the boys talked about poker and hung out. After a few hours, the night started winding down for everyone since they had to head to Bluff Studios in the morning. Not Jeff and I! haha. We actually met some random girl at James Beach who invited us to go to some underground music party in Venice. We ended up hopping in a cab with 4 people we did not know and went to some abandoned looking place. When you walk inside it’s a bunch of hipster Venice people sitting on couches with a home made looking bar in the back and all these musicians were playing. It was so rad. I love stuff like that.

All in all a good night and made me proud to be part of AP. I hope the college guys had as good a time as I did. Congrats Mike (MSBHVNTWIN) on your win!
Xoxo,
Trishelle

Costa Rica trip

04:00 PM on Tue Jan 19 2010

By Matt Vengrin

I had originally planned on relaxing at the beach the entire time, but that plan got shot completely.
I am definitely not complaining, I arguably had more fun in San Jose, CR, then I did in Jaco, CR.

Monday-Fly in from the Bahamas: Finally, I am out of the Atlantis- horrible service, I doubt I’ll be going back. I felt like I was being shaken down every time I went somewhere (that’s a story for another blog)

I got into the airport and AP had arranged for a driver to come pick me up. This was the first time in my life I had stepped off a plane to see someone holding a sign with my name on it. Unfortunately, the driver and I did not find each other until about 30 minutes of walking around, but it was cool none the less. I met up with my friend Jeff and we had a beer/reminisced for a bit and then I hit the sack, tired from all the traveling.

Tuesday-B-day party: Tuesday was a chill day, slept in, then I decided I was hungry. I was staying at my friends house who works for AP and his fridge had basically nothing in it so I ventured out into the world to find some food. I found a great chicken place, but there was one problem.. They did not speak English at all, nor did I speak Spanish. Eventually I just pointed to a picture of a chicken with tortillas and then paid what the price said. It was a funny sight, but I got fed and relaxed. Later that night we went out for another friends birthday to a few bars and then came back and played pool, which, after drinking can be interesting.

Wednesday: Time to get some business done, I went into the office and did some work, had some meetings, and a whole lot of hot chocolate (that’s right, I drink hot chocolate instead of coffee) Afterward we went bowling with a bunch of people, and then out to eat and drink at another bar. Then my friend and I took 2 women (one he had met a week ago, and her friend who she had told me she was going to introduce me to) to a club called Prive. There were actually 5 of us, as the friend who I was hanging out with came with a guy (friend). We had a great time, had a few more drinks, danced, and were about to leave when there was a 3 way huddle between the girls, and their friend that came along. The girl seemed upset, and her girlfriend was consoling her while this guy was talking to them, so my friend and I decided to just bounce and see them another time. It turned out that the guy was getting jealous (probably because of my sweet dance moves) and he had made the girl upset.

Thursday: Well I was supposed to be in Jaco (a beach town that I love, and coincidently my brother and his girlfriend were hiding out before facing reality back in Austin where they will be getting jobs shortly). Obviously I was not there yet, as I got back pretty late and tired from the office the night before. I heard a knocking at the door at 730am. Now, as most of you know poker players are not used to getting up at 730am. But for golf, I’ll make an exception. I had a great round with some friends (shot a 99) and then headed back for a nap, by the time I got up I had to make a decision to go to Jaco, or Palmares.

Palmares is a drinking festival that is held in Costa Rica for one week a year, and Thursday was the opening night. I decided to partake in this, as you only live once. Pura Vida! It was nuts, literally hundreds of thousands of people drinking on the streets/bars/tents they had set up. They also had some great authentic Costa Rican food. There was music, drinking, and friends, it was a great time.

Friday- Finally, I get to Jaco!: Low key night, eat dinner with my bro and his girlfriend at a great restaurant called El Hicaco. Its an amazing seafood place right on the ocean. I had lobster bisque, lobster tails, and a tenderloin.

Saturday- Surfing: My brother challenged me to a surfing contest on face book a month ago, and I take challenges seriously, so we surfed all day. The waves were enormous and it was tough to paddle out past the break. Literally when you thought you were past it, another huge wave would break. Eventually we made it past the breaks, and surfed for a good few hours. Then we showered up, had dinner at the same restaurant as the day before, and headed down into town for some drinks. We went to a great place called Los Amigos. I was tapped on the shoulder by Raquel,  a girl I had met last time I was in town and we talked for a bit and then headed out to a sushi place for more drinks.

Sunday: Poker day! It was tough to sit and play poker overlooking the ocean, but somebody’s got to do it.

I had some deep runs, but nothing major. Kendra, my brothers girlfriend, was very awesome and cooked us dinner and made sure we were comfortable as we played.

And Monday I traveled back and am here in Malibu, where its raining really hard.  Its supposed to be raining all week, which is okay as I have a busy week.

I am meeting with the Absolute Poker College Challenge finalists, who were flown to LA by AP, and are going to play a live final table to win their tuition to college. The final table is Thursday, and I am meeting with them (and probably trishelle) for dinner Wednesday night.  I wish this program was around when I was in college!

Hope you enjoyed this uncharitably long blog entry by me.

Don’t Forget the Soap

03:00 PM on Sun Jan 17 2010

By Gene Bromberg

The rules for the 2010 World Series of Poker were released this week and two rule changes/additions are getting a fair bit of attention and I think are worth bringing to your attention. The first change isn’t exactly a change at all, it’s more of an acceptance of the world as it is–cell phones, iPhones, Blackberries, Palms etc can be used at the table for texting/Twitter purposes. Last year there was a rule prohibiting players from using their communication devices at the table but with the explosion of Twittering that rule quickly went by the wayside.

You still can’t talk on the phone unless you’re one table-length from your seat but tweeting is now OK. Texting people at your table, however, is still strictly verboten. A lot of instant news came out of the WSOP via twitter and made social-media superstars out of Doyle Brunson, Erik Seidel and Joe Sebok (who has more (deleted) Twitter followers than you can count). And this year, as will last, you can follow the Absolute Poker twitter feed for news and pics and other info from the Amazon Room floor.

The other rule should make for some interesting times for the floorpeople. Rule 37 deals with Player Conduct, and one of those rules deals with something of a delicate subject–hygiene. As in, bad hygiene, and how it will no longer be tolerated. To quote directly:

All participants are entitled to expect civility and courtesy from one another at every Tournament table and throughout the Tournament area. Any individual who encounters behavior that is not civil or courteous — or is abusive in any way — is encouraged to immediately contact a Tournament official. This shall include, but is not limited to, any player whose personal hygiene has become disruptive to the other players seated at their table.

If you’re personal hygiene can be accurately described as “disruptive” I think it’s fair to say that this should be addressed. Quickly. It is something of a cliche that poker players are a malodorous lot and one I think is somewhat overstated. Most players, the vast majority even, are Irish Spring fresh. Or, close enough that you wouldn’t worry about getting in an elevator with them. Still, when you get 3,000 people in one room, and they’re in that room for 12 hours or more, under high-pressure situations, you’re gonna get the odd person who smells a bit funky. And, on occasion, you’ll get the guy who shows up at noon looking like he slept under a bridge and smells like he crawled out of  a landfill. These are the people this rule will address and, having sat next to a couple of stinkers in my day, I think this is a wise move.

Whether Tournament Director Jack Effel and his staff will be equipped with Wet-Naps (or fire hoses) remains to be seen, but it’s good to see Harrah’s once again gently tweaking the rules to deal with situations that rule-abiding players just shouldn’t have to deal with.

Costa Rica bound!

04:00 PM on Wed Jan 13 2010

By Matt Vengrin

I had a pretty good time in the Bahamas, I ended up finishing 166/1529 (224 paid). Unfortunately, the cards did not fall my way during the tournament and when I eventually had to coinflip I lost.

I only played the main event, which was surprising because there were so many great tournaments during this trip. I spent the rest of my time relaxing outside, seeing the sites of the Bahamas, and being very lazy on the aptly named “Lazy River”. Basically it’s a circular pool of water, going around the Atlantis, with rapids and wavepools. After getting my fill of water and poker, I have decided to take a trip to Costa Rica before returning to LA.

Costa Rica is like my second home, I feel completely at ease when I am there. Especially at this little beach town called Jaco. My brother and his gf are currently vacationing there, so it will be nice to go and see them before I head back to the west coast. I will also get to catch up with some good friends within the AP community, and of course, go out and party.

That’s all for now, I’m off to catch my flight.

Last Blog in ‘09

03:00 PM on Thu Dec 31 2009

By Trishelle

I am writing to you from a gorgeous cabin in Vail, Colorado right now. 2009 started as one of the worst years and ended as one of the best. I ended a relationship with someone I was living with, I hadn’t worked in awhile, I had to move out and find another place. It was a really tough beginning to the year. Since all of that happened, I found a place and have a roommate that I love, I started working a lot, I booked a pilot, and I have this wonderful opportunity to represent Absolute Poker and work with amazing people. It’s truly been an amazing year and I’m looking forward to 2010.

I came out to Vail with some friends and met a great group of people. This cabin is gorgeous and I will put a video blog up soon. Tonight is New Years Eve and we are all cooking dinner and playing games and hot tubbing in the snow. It will be a pretty low key night, which I appreciate. Last night was our first night and we went pretty big. I will have lots of stories to tell in ‘10.

I apologize for the short blog, but I can’t stay on a computer in such a beautiful place. I just want to say Happy New Year to everyone and I hope that you all get everything that you want out of life and much happiness.

I wanted to thank everyone at AP for everything, you guys are awesome. I look forward to working with ya’ll next year!

Catching up!

12:00 PM on Tue Dec 15 2009

By Lacey Jones

Long time no blog! How’s everyone’s holiday season so far? I’m doing quite well and finally have a chance to catch up and say hello. I’ve been working pretty hard the past few months and very soon all my hard work will have paid off. There are so many great projects and jobs I’ve been blessed to be apart of this year. One of them that some of you may know was hosting the WSOP final table for the Main Event. I had such a great time and can’t wait to show you the interviews, photos and even a few things you only get to know behind the scenes. I’d like to say a big Congratulations to Joe Cada! Yes many people are saying how lucky he was, but a lot of people didn’t watch every hand that was played out. Seeing only 1 hour of the ESPN table doesn’t even come close to what really happened at that final table. I was very impressed how Joe switched gears once they were down to four and how well really knew the table. Well played kid. From that final table I made it to my own final table in Costa Rica a few days later, but I’ll save that fun story for my next post.

Get ready for more blogs from me on this site and on my personal website www.LaceyPoker.com I’m going to be writing an end of the year wrap up there and will show previews here on Absolute. It’ll be filled in with tons of pictures, videos, and all my adventures I have yet to share with all my friends. I hope everyone is having a wonderful end to this 2009. Best wishes and Good Luck at the tables!

Malibu

12:00 PM on Sat Nov 21 2009

By Matt Vengrin

I love the beach. It started with family vacations in Cape May, NJ, during the summer. I built sand cars, chased sand crabs during dusk, and then fell asleep to the ocean waves. Its just something about hearing the ocean that makes me completely happy and at ease with everything in my life.

So I just got a second place in Malibu, and this is the view I woke up to this morning for the first time.

2

I still need to get a couch and a nice desk to play poker at, and once I do that the move will be complete.

I am thrilled to have this place now and expect to spend most of my time here besides traveling for poker tournaments and to do promotional events. Here is another view from my deck:

1

Speaking of fun promotional events, this weekend I will be judging the Miss California Teen USA pageant, which takes place in Palm Springs, CA. I will not be able to enjoy my Malibu Beachhouse this weekend, but look forward to spending a ton of time there in the future.

Poker has been good lately, I have spent a little more time playing cash games on AP and tournaments. I really enjoy the new schedule they have now, especially the new PLO tournament. I am an avid PLO player and hope that this event can get really big.

I am off to finish editing a big project I am working on, and when its done I will let you all know about it.

-Matt

7-2 IS YOUR TICKET TO SEVENTH HEAVEN

03:00 PM on Fri Sep 18 2009

By softeam

Did you hear that we’ve changed the rules?  Our new 7 Deuce tables seriously alter the poker terrain. It all begins when we transform those hellish 7-2 hole cards into prized possessions.  There’s cash and glory with your name on it if you can bluff your way to winning while holding the worst hand in poker.

Our 7 Deuce tables work just like our regular No Limit Hold’em ring games, except everyone at the table will place a prop bet into the side pot when joining the table.  When someone wins a hand while holding a 7-2, the winner will also score the side pot.  Of course, that’s really only the beginning.

Absolute Poker’s 7 Deuce is much more than some run of the mill jackpot game. It actually gets majorly fierce. Luck isn’t the secret of success here.  You’re going to need to bluff your way to glory. There’s no point calling each raise and you can’t just wait around hoping to land a 7-2.  Winning begins with outwitting your opponents.

Play for honor and let those other fools surrender their gold.  You’ll love how it feels to watch them empty their wallets only to see them fold at the river.  It all adds up to some of the most aggressive action you’ve ever seen.

Are you a grabber of glory?  Nice!  Did you know you can post your 7-2 stories right into the blog?  If you’ve lived to tell about it, you might as well brag about it blog-style.
