I finally got to meet Matt Vengrin! Last week I went to dinner with a few of the guys who made the final table for APCC. They were filming the final table the next day at Bluff Studios, so the night before we went to a Mexican place in Venice Beach (which I love) for dinner and drinks. Thanks AP! :) Joe Sebok was there, who I think is hilarious by the way, along with a few of the players. Christina Lindley was there. That girl is hot and a damn good poker player apparently. Mike Hofer who actually won the event and 10 thousand dollars for college and his girlfriend were there. They were both super cool and it was fun to meet and hang out with people who were really down to earth and excited about poker. I also got to meet Stephanie and Garin from AP who were so fun to hang with. I’m pretty new to AP, so I’m just starting to get to know everyone and this is so fun for me. I love getting involved with everything and meeting new people and mingling. Matt V is my new partner in crime.
After dinner, Christina suggested we all go to James Beach for drinks, so we headed there. That’s the place on the movie “I Love You Man” where they go for tacos and they say it’s the best tacos in LA. I can’t really attest to that, but the drinks are nice. A little bit after we got there, I convinced Jeff Madsen to join us! I’ve known Madsen for a few years and he’s a good friend of mine, but I forget that people know him from poker. The college guys were pretty excited when he showed up so that made me pretty happy. Jeff is great with new people, so he and the boys talked about poker and hung out. After a few hours, the night started winding down for everyone since they had to head to Bluff Studios in the morning. Not Jeff and I! haha. We actually met some random girl at James Beach who invited us to go to some underground music party in Venice. We ended up hopping in a cab with 4 people we did not know and went to some abandoned looking place. When you walk inside it’s a bunch of hipster Venice people sitting on couches with a home made looking bar in the back and all these musicians were playing. It was so rad. I love stuff like that.
All in all a good night and made me proud to be part of AP. I hope the college guys had as good a time as I did. Congrats Mike (MSBHVNTWIN) on your win!
Xoxo,
Trishelle
There might have been torrential rain pouring out of the unusually murky LA sky, but the sun was shining on our all-star cast of college poker talent indoors at Bluff Studios on Thursday. If you didn’t tune in live to watch five college students fight for their tuition, you missed some exhilarating action.

(from left to right: Greg, Bryan, Mike, Frank, Vincent)
Here’s how the chip count looked at our live final table when play got underway Thursday morning:
FUHRANKLAN (Frank Alberts) 23,100
MSBHVNTWIN (Mike Hofer) 17,500
CRISSTOOPHER (Greg Shevach) 14,100
MOONLIGHT220 (Vincent Lay) 10,200
KAZIBETTA (Bryan Wooley) 4,200
BROCK_1923 (Brock Solveson) couldn’t make the trip from Wisconsin and settled for 6th place and $2000.
It was all smooth sailing at the APCC Final Table at least until 2:00 p.m. PT. That’s when the pace finally started to pick up and the otherwise conservative play went out the window.
Frank, the original chip leader, was the 1st to fall. Frank’s Q5 pocket cards (left below) were no match for Vincent’s pair of kings and fours at the showdown.
18-year-old Frank won $2250 for 5th place, which isn’t too shabby considering that this future English teacher already has his tuition paid for.

Vincent also delivered the 2nd blow of the afternoon, knocking Bryan out with Aces and 6s.
Bryan will be taking $3,000 back to sunny Florida for finishing 4th.
After a quick meal break, the tables finally turned on Vincent. He went all-in holding 76 and lost to Mike’s AQ with KA5A on the table.
Vincent will be returning to the Big Apple with $3500.
And suddenly there were two…
After dominating all afternoon, Mike had the upper hand at the start of the heads-up battle with 59,000 chips vs. Greg’s 10,200.
It only took a few seconds for Greg to be forced all-in.
With 4c Ac to Mike’s Ad 9h, Greg needed a 4 on the river. When the 7 of clubs hit the felt, a winner was crowned.
Congratulations go out to 28-year-old Phoenix native Mike Hofer who earned $10,000, an APCC ring, and a profile in Bluff Magazine. Greg Shevach takes home $5,000 for second place.
See you all next semester!
The wait is officially over. They battled hard all semester long and now they’re off to Los Angeles for the final exam of their lives. Yes, the Absolute Poker College Challenge Final Table happens tomorrow and you can catch it all online in real time.
Tune in on Thursday starting at 1 p.m. ET and watch five college students fight for their tuition. We’re not only streaming it all live on the net, but AP’s own Matt Vengrin will be doing the play-by-play.
Remember, our Player of the Year will win their tuition, a custom-made APCC championship ring, and an exclusive showcase in Bluff Magazine. Some of this year’s contestants are making the trip from three time zones away, but you can be there with a single click. Just follow our live feed right here. Don’t forget to read our blogs and track us on twitter during and after the event.
If my college experiences are to be believed, pulling an all-nighter probably won’t work here either. Good luck to all the players anyway.
Last week we announced quite a few changes on Absolute Poker with the addition of the beautiful Trishelle Cannatella and countless additions to the poker software. Our players and Trishelle can now enjoy synchronized breaks in all of our tournaments, new lobby filters and icons to help you find your favorite games easier. In fact, we added a special icon of a naked Trishelle to identify when she will be at the table. Actually, that’s not true at all. But we SHOULD do that.
A little background on Trishelle’s poker experience includes her first live tournament entry at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas and walking away with the title. Her victory came after countless hours honing her poker skills in home games.
In 2005, Trishelle appeared on “Celebrity Poker Showdown,” furthering her desire to pursue a career in poker. Look out for Trishelle on the cover of an upcoming issue of Online Poker Pro where she gave an exclusive interview on her signing.
We are down to our last week in several of our promotions including AP College Challenge and our $28K Points Race. The APCC main event is scheduled for Monday and we’ve qualified 15 players per week since Oct 4th so there will be quite the frenzy in the main event to get to the final table and be filmed live in Los Angeles. SANJOHUSTLA is at the top of the leaderboard for the Points Race but he only leads by a mere 41 points. It will be a tight race and these last 5 days will be crucial.
If I could change the font size in the title, I would, because our Sunday guarantees just got

We’ve been busy marketing our College Challenge event this past month and are seeing improvements in all of our tourneys. We’ve been sending posters all over Universities in the US and can see trackable results. That’s the greatest thing about working in marketing for an online service-providing business. Everything we do is trackable. With the exception of TV (which still has decent trackability), almost everything we promote gives us the ability to see how it is performing within hours of launching it, sometimes as soon as minutes.
In other industries sometimes you have to wait years to see your hard work get in front of your customers, but with online poker, it’s instantaneous. We get to reach out to our players any time we want to test things, ask questions, get feedback, etc. Not many other types of businesses can say that. We also get to see our players face to face at live poker events and promotions, which is great to interact with customers on a personal level like that. We love our players and are as passionate about poker as they are.
As we round the corner into our fall season many things come to mind. The obvious being NFL football, back to school, change in weather, and end to summer vacations with only pictures and memories to carry us until the next summer. As for the poker world the excitement for the November 9 grows, as does qualification for the WSOP Europe…UB’s aruba event and a few others. However, if you are a college student, one of the biggest and best promotions in the history of the college world, is about ready to launch.
That’s right, Absolutepoker is bringing back its online college program, the Absolutepoker College Challenge (APCC) featuring “win your tuition”. College kids can participate in a 2month long, free, fun and challenging poker contest which allows students to not only win AP swag, ipods, laptops but actual cash to pay for a semester’s tuition.
As I think back to my college days, I remember scouring the campus for the $5 min ATM machines, waiting for $10 all you can drink beer nights at the pubs, and filling out every application possible, applying for scholarship programs offering as little as $200. Oh, not to mention working 2-3 jobs throughout my 4 year crash course ensuring I wouldn’t need to add an extra year of financial burden to my parents.
So where the heck was this contest when I was in college or something like it? The fact is, these things don’t exist. And as college tuitions have increased dramatically the operators of AbsolutePoker are pleased to offer this one of a kind program. Details will be posted mid September on the website with the first satellites starting early October. One big kicker to this year’s contest is the leader board for player of the year in which we’ll play down to the final 6 online and play out the final table live from a studio in LA. To be filmed and aired via the web by bluffmagazine.com!
So college students- listen up. Spread the word and prepare to sign up and participate for pride, fun and cash!
